Evaluating An Inference Activity with 5E and UDL

Original Lesson Plan Reflection

When teaching inferences I like to make my lessons highly visual using books and picture cards to make the context come alive. However I chose to revise this lesson to include technology and see how I can best implement UDL principles and monitor my performance through analysis of an educational model such as the 5E instructional model. My original lesson has strengths in breaking down the material by using an inference chart to break down an inference for the physical images and stories presented. I also included images for realistic scenarios in order to ensure students make connections to their daily lives. However, a weakness I saw was that the chart is only meant for writing with a pencil or marker and limits choices for those students who would prefer to represent their ideas differently and denying them of accessibility features by using a device to transfer speech to text. My original lesson plan also included the use of a short video however, I did not realize that you have to turn on the closed captions feature on certain videos before transferring them to Ed puzzle. I like using the Edpuzzle with my students because I see it as way to evaluate their learning on the lesson by answering questions. My original lesson allowed students to explore by thinking critically, evaluate, and elaborate but only verbally or through written expression.

Revised Lesson Plan Reflection

After remaking my lesson I felt like it was a much stronger lesson to present to ALL of my students. It considered UDL principles by providing options for representation and expression  as well as all  components of the 5E model. Although I do not currently service students with visual impairments I do have students who use screen reading technology since they have difficulty decoding and creating slides is something I can share with them to practice at home. I had to make sure I included accessibility features such as Alt text to all the images since I included many images as well as titles for all slides. I feel like my lesson encouraged a greater opportunity for discussion among  students. Using different resources not only allows catering to students individual learning style but helps them apply their learning in various contexts.  My new lesson plan allows for students to demonstrate their learning by clicking, writing or typing in answers and also encourages collaboration.
