INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

For my capstone project, I decided to observe a former colleague while wearing the hat of an instructional designer. My goal is to understand and interpret the work she is actively doing and see where it coincides with what I have learned about instructional design and technology. After my observations, I learned that the frame work they follow is not as rich as others. Also, they are not big in technology use. One framework that really resonated with me is the Backwards design Model. This particular design asks the teacher to start at the end, consider what the students need to learn; and use that to intentionally choose the activities, the materials and the assessments that will be needed to ensure the goal is met. It forces you to put the students’ vast learning styles at the forefront in a way that ensures no style or particular need will be unmet. Through this thought process teachers are able to expand their thinking as they search for the “just right” materials which can often be met by incorporating technology; i.e. digital devices and digital tools.
