Applying 5E to redesign lesson: Math Word Problems

Summary

I chose this math lesson that I completed with second grade for an observation. I received a lot of feedback on it, too, which my administrators wanted to see more of students being the facilitators of their learning. In the original lesson plan and identified students being put in groups strategically in order to support student facilitators. I believe that implementing the 5 E practice is allowed for more opportunities for students to utilize and expressed their thinking. The inclusion of technology would best support in student engagement. Digital tools that were included in the revision were Google Slides, Jamboard, iPad applications (notes and whiteboard), etc. Inclusion of these Digital tools, allow for more creative input on behalf of the students as well as an opportunity to be able to display their work on the Promethean board during share outs.

Lesson Redesign
EngageIn my redesign, I would present a problem that is more open ended.  For example, I would provide a problem of the day that would be something along the lines of, “”Emma has a jar of 63 marbles. Some marbles are blue, and some marbles are pink.  She gives some marbles to her friend Jacob and now she has 42 marbles left. What possible variation of pink and blue marbles with Emma give to Jacob?”
ExploreStudents could utilize available writing tools to represent their thinking of the problem of the day, as well as the lesson task.  Students could also utilize their iPads to use programs like Notes or Whiteboard to express their thinking.
ExplainIn the revision, I would review the different strategies that we’ve practiced together to help them solve their word problems.  I would also provide YouTube videos for their reference in the event they needed a mini refresher during their independent time.
ElaborateStudents can utilize a Jamboard or Google Slides together where they can display how they solved each problem.  Students could either screenshot (if work was done on an iPad) or take a picture of their work and display it to their peers.  They could elaborate more on their thinking and present it to the class during share outs.
EvaluateStudents could write an exit ticket on the strategy they found to be the best way to solve their word problem and why they found that strategy to be the best.  They could discuss their struggles with other strategies, or why the other strategies were not better contenders to solve their problem.
