“Instructional technology” is the process of designing, implementing, and refining educational experiences through the use of technology in order to improve learning results.

Instructional design is the process of developing educational experiences to make learning more engaging, effective, and efficient.

The two fields place a strong emphasis on modifying educational programs to accommodate a variety of student needs. Adaptive learning is made possible by instructional technology, which modifies content according to student success. In order to accommodate all learners, instructional design frameworks like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concentrate on developing accessible content from the bottom up. Both instructional technology and instructional design prioritize creating effective learning experiences by aligning instructional strategies and tools with clear learning objectives. Instructional designers may use technology as a primary resource, but the choice of technology is driven by the desired learning outcomes rather than the technology itself.

In education, design models are organized frameworks that serve as a guide for organizing, developing, delivering, and evaluating educational activities. In order to help educators meet the requirements of their students and preserve consistency, they offer systematic techniques to connect objectives, teaching strategies, resources, and assessments.

Instructional technology is the use of digital tools for teaching and learning. Instructional design is creating ways to help students learn. There is an overlap between these two concepts. Both address the goal of providing teaching and learning. Design models are guides to assist educators in constructing learning experiences that aim to help students learn academic concepts. For example, blooms taxonomy assists educators in designing instruction that incorporates low, medium, and high level thinking regarding an academic topic. Backward design, guides educators to first look at the “big picture” or main goal of a unit and then use it to create learning experiences that meet the “big picture” or main goal of a unit.

Instructional technology refers to the use of educational tools, resources, and strategies to enhance teaching and learning. From EDU 226 and my experience as a Spanish language teacher, I realized that instructional technology isn’t just about using devices in the classroom. It’s about how technology can increase student engagement, improve access to learning, and support the overall teaching process.

Instructional design is the process of planning lessons and creating materials that promote effective learning. It’s about structuring content to meet specific learning goals and delivering it in a way that supports student success.

There’s a clear overlap between instructional technology and instructional design. Instructional design is the plan, while instructional technology provides the tools to make that plan work.

Design models are frameworks that guide the process of creating instructional materials. In EDU 226, we explored Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which ensures learning is accessible to all students by focusing on Engagement, Representation, and Expression. UDL helps remove barriers so that all students have an equal chance to succeed. We also explored the Triple E Framework, which focuses on Engagement, Enhancement, and Extension of learning goals. This framework helps teachers select the right tools to meet learning objectives and design experiences that positively impact student learning. This framework is a practical guide for teachers when integrating technology effectively.

Zandra Prestigiacomo (She/Her)

Instructional Technology refers to using digital tools and devices for teaching and learning. In my professional experience, digital tools have been used for assessment purposes in math and reading. In some occasions, the teacher leads the assessment, in others the student works independently. In the previous course, I learned that instructional technology also refers to the websites and devices we use to enhance student learning. Some of this tech can refer to the ipads, laptops, and smartboard in our classroom, as well as the programs: iready, zearn, joy school, acadience, powerpoint, youtube, epic, class dojo, and google classroom that we used throughout the year.

I believe instructional design to be the planning of the intentional use of any or all of the above technologies to ensure student learning. Both instructional technology and design go hand in hand. The design models are specific frameworks we use to guide our planning.

Instructional technology is incorporating digital tools, apps, devices, or other technology to engage and promote learning. It is also used by educators to enhance, facilitate, and differentiate instruction. Instructional design is the actual apps and or devices used to make and facilitate instruction. This includes training educators on how to use these programs. These two concepts and ideas overlap, and I see them as independent and dependent variables, where one is dependent on the other. Instructional design is the independent variable and instructional technology is the dependent variable. Both of these are an important part of educating our students and the implementation of how to and what materials to use. Design models are a set of instructional guidelines or frameworks. Teachers and educators use these frameworks to clarify expectations, outcomes, and objectives.

Instructional technology includes the tools that are used to help students with learning. For example, the internet, computer programs, digital tools, videos, and online interactive games are all examples of instructional technology. This technology can help provide students with multiple ways of engaging with learning, as well as accessibility for students who need language support or students with disabilities.

Instructional design includes the process of creating the instructional materials needed for learning/education. It includes thinking about what the learner needs, which tools can be utilized, and checkpoints to see if the instruction was successful in meeting the instructional objectives.

There is overlap between the two concepts. For example, instructional design uses instructional technology. However, instructional design focuses more on the process of creating, utilizing, and evaluating instructional materials, whereas instructional technology focuses on the digital tools being used.

There are some design models that are used during the development of instructional materials (ex: ADDIE, UDL, KEMP, the triple E method, etc.) to make sure that the materials being created help meet the needed learning outcomes. These design models help provide a framework for the instructional design process.

Instructional technology is using different platforms of technology for instruction. Some examples are: slides, classroom and even this blog post.

Instructional design is the process of creating these instructional materials for learning.

There can be overlaps between the two as we often use instructional design models in instructional technology. These models are created to be used for instruction.

The design models are the frameworks that are used.

Instructional technology encompasses the entire spectrum of designing, developing, utilizing, managing, and evaluating technology within the educational landscape. Google tools like Docs, Slides, and Classroom exemplify the practical application of instructional technology in daily learning interactions.

Instructional design, on the other hand, is a systematic process of creating instructional materials that consider how students learn and which methods and materials best support their academic goals. This process empowers educators to craft-focused, clear lesson plans aligned with specific learning objectives, ultimately enhancing students’ comprehension and application of knowledge.

While instructional design and instructional technology are distinct disciplines, they intersect in several key areas. Collaboration occurs in the development of materials, professional development initiatives, and the utilization of learning science research to inform the creation of suitable learning resources. Both fields contribute to enhancing pedagogical practices and fostering connections with parents, families, and caregivers to support student learning.

Design models play a pivotal role in instructional design by providing a framework for understanding and translating abstract learning theories into practical applications. These models offer structure and visual representation, aiding instructional designers in navigating the learning environment and ensuring the applicability of models to diverse learner populations.

In essence, while distinct in their focus, both instructional technology and instructional design contribute significantly to the overall educational experience. The use of technology for teaching and learning in the classroom. The main focus is to emphasize the strategies and resources that support the teaching process.

Making educational materials is known as instructional design.  This also goes beyond producing instructional materials; it carefully evaluates how students learn along with what resources and strategies would best support them in reaching their objective.  The main principle is that students are guided by the concepts and for any learning group the design, development and presentation of the educational resources help them in the instructional design.

There is a lot of overlap in instructional technology and instructional design.  The only difference is that IT focuses on the use of technology to support learning and in ID the focus is on the design and development of the educational materials and resources.

A design model is an object-based representation that illustrates the use cases of a system. It represents something and then implements it in the system like guiding the instructional design process.

Angelica Laburda (she/her)

The term “instructional technology” means when you use technology to support instruction – it can be hardware (iPads, chromebooks, macbooks) or software (LMS, digital programs).
Instructional design is when teachers create lessons and modules when considering how students think and learn.
Are there overlaps?

  • Yes. considering both gives teachers a chance to make their content more accessible to students.

When we mention design models, what do we mean?

  • they include ADDIE, KEMP, and SAM

Computational thinking is the base set of skills to help you interact with the various models

Shavon Glover (She/Her/Hers)

The term “instructional technology” means technology that encompasses the design, development, use, management and evaluation of technology in education. For example, docs, slides, and classroom are examples of Google tools we use daily in our instructional technology with our learners.
I define instructional design as a series of creation of instructional materials that takes into the consideration of how students learn and what materials and methods will most effectively support learners to achieve their academic goals. Instructional design allows educators to design lesson plans that are focused, clear and aligned with learning objectives. Instructional design allows educators to structure their lessons in a manner that will support students content comprehension and applying what they have learned.
Instructional design and instructional technology do observe some overlap in the sense that there is collaboration in the development of material design, professional development opportunities and both obtain information from the same learning science research to gather information in order to design and create appropriate learning materials. While their applicability may show up differently across the learning spectrum, both create opportunities for educators and/or stakeholders to enhance their pedagogy and even connect to parents/families/caregivers in supporting their learners. while educational developers and instructional designers have divergent paths of training and professional advancement, each honor their creation by putting forth tools that will support instruction and learning in and out of the classroom.
When we mention design models, we are discussing how design models can help/support instructional designers to comprehend and/or make sense of what abstract learning can look like and how the design can support the ability to enable real world application across multiple settings. In discussing design models, I’m led to believe that instructional design models provide organization and visuality to learning theories and principles that will guide instructional designers navigate the learning environment to ensure models are applicable to all learning populations.

Instructional technology is any type of technology that aids in educating students with their learning. Instructional design is the creation of instructional materials to help students learn the content. There is an overlap between instructional technology and instructional design because both are used to create engaging learning experiences to educate students. Design models are like UDL and 5E. These models are used to create lessons that are able to reach all students on their different needs of learning.

Instructional Technology is a theory or practice of using technology for education. It’s a digital tool that used to further educational practices in the classroom. For example, google classroom, newsela, kahoot, zearn, etc. An instructional design are how the tool is designed and what resources are used. I do believe that there is an overlap between the two because once a teacher decides to use the tool for instruction, students are assigned a task, modifications are made, groupings and it can live within multiple attachments/assignments to be completed for that lesson & future lessons. Designing models can be step by step assignments, text to read, kahoots and much more. its allowing technology tools to play a role in how educators deliver content for students to complete as part as comprehension of the lesson/unit.

Kattie Guerrero-Valoy

Instructional Technology is the way a tool is used to learn a new skill/s with the use of technology. For example, Khan academy is a form of instructional technology to learn math. Instructional Design is the way a tool is constructed for its users to have a successful experience while using the tool. I believe that there is an overlap between the two because the design of a tool will influence the way it is being used for instructional purposes.

Designing models means the different tabs within an instructional tool for its users to navigate. This can include, materials, activities attachments, etc.

Ashley Perez

Kattie I agree with your view on Instructional Design. I feel each tool that educators choose for the classroom are chosen based on the academic needs for that lesson. for example, checking for understanding, a quick zearn activity can do that or a performance task that has text attachments with various focus questions pertaining to your strategic groupings in the classroom. I also agree that there is an overlap because all tools are modified for instruction and that may look different in every classroom and lesson. the way we present and utilize the tools daily.

Instructional design is the process of creating learning experiences and materials in a systematic and effective manner, with the goal of improving the quality of teaching and learning. It applies instructional theories and principles to the development of learning experiences that meet specific learning objectives.

Instructional design includes the design of learning experiences, while instructional technology is focuses specifically on the use of technology to enhance those learning experiences. Both fields aim to create effective and engaging learning experiences that meet the needs of individual learners.

Instructional design models guide the design and development of meaningful learning experiences. They help instructional designers ensure that their materials and activities are aligned with the learning objectives, and meet the needs of the learners.

The term instructional technology refers to the technology used to create, deliver or enhance learning/instruction. I define instructional design as a method/way to design learning that supports students that will help them be successful. There are overlaps with these two models.  They both include the creation of systems that teach. They both use various methods to achieve the goal of instruction. When we mention design models, we mean organized methods of teaching and learning that utilize a specific set of steps or ideas. These steps help to maximize positive outcomes.

Instructional Technology: Computer-based learning, online learning, videos or modules to be completed with the use of technology. These are all tools that can be used to enhance student engagement.

Instructional Design: This is where the tools or resources used for learning are created.

The overlap happens when the instructional design aspect is being incorporated into the instructional technology or lesson. This may look like the interaction students have with the module that has been chosen for them to complete.

Hey Warrick I agree with you that the use of technology tools are means to help enhance student learning, not the final goal.

Instructional technology are digital tools that help support learning objectives. These tools can increase student engagement. They can also integrate UDL into a lesson. For example, students can use Scratch to show their understanding of a lesson instead of writing. Furthermore, these tools can make the lesson more accessible to all students. For instance, a child can use word reader to help them navigate a text.

Instructional design is the step by step development of a unit of lessons that includes the objectives, assessment, reflection and revisions.

There are overlaps between the two because instructional design could integrate instructional technology to enhance the lessons. As I mentioned instructional technology can increase student engagement and accessibility. So instructional design is enhanced with the use of instructional technology.

I believe we have been introduced to design models. Your lessons usually follow the 5 E’s, which is a type of design model. During EDU 226 we also explored the design model of the Triple E. Both models involve engaging the students, and extending their learning with exploration. These two design models are very student centered.
