Lesson Plan Redesign

Original Lesson Planhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1_1t_37Ba67TxwBIuTPkstWLeqyyKikkH5rp3ddAG5_c/edit?usp=sharing

Strengths of the original plan

  • Using multimedia resources. The documentary “Our Planet” on Netflix, can engage students and provide visual examples of animals.
  • Different project formats (Google Slides, physical poster board, video presentation) promotes creativity and accommodates different learning preferences.
  • The availability of various materials, including books and internet research, allows students to have multiple sources of information to complete their reports.

Weaknesses of the original plan

  • One of the 5Es in digital learning is to EVALUATE. There is no form of evaluation in this lesson plan. This means there are no opportunities for students to receive feedback on their progress.
  • Another area of the 5Es is to EXTEND. There is no time for an extension of time. More time to study the film, more time to discuss the film, and more time to write the report. More time would be needed especially since this lesson is being done in a SPED setting.

Revised Lesson Planhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1QQoSpmIrmfZFHY746IZJ1A4ACqeSRal7Nn1abNN6LeE/edit?usp=sharing

Strengths:

  • Incorporation of digital tools: These tools can provide visual support, multimedia elements, and interactive features that support diverse learning styles and preferences.
  • Collaborative Learning. This cooperative learning approach allows students to share responsibilities, have an exchange of ideas, and it also supports the development of social skills.

Weaknesses:

The assessment of the lesson plan focuses on group presentations. One person in a group can carry a heavier responsibility while the others in the group may not have to do as much work in the presentation.

Final Review:

Both the original and revised lessons aim to engage 5th-grade students in conducting animal research and presenting their findings. The revised lesson, however, demonstrates stronger instructional design elements. It incorporates the 5E model of instruction, providing a clear structure for engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation. Additionally, the revised lesson includes the use of two digital tools, promotes collaboration and critical thinking, and allows for individualized assessments. By incorporating the 5E model and considering the needs of students in a special education setting, the revised lesson offers a more comprehensive and inclusive approach, providing a framework for active learning, differentiation, and meaningful engagement.
