For my capstone project, I collaborated with a 7th-grade Spanish teacher to explore how gamification can enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. The goal was to modernize traditional vocabulary and grammar lessons, which often left students feeling disengaged, by introducing game-based elements that encourage active participation and collaboration.
Using tools like Class Dojo points, interactive quizzes on Kahoot, and team challenges, I helped design lessons that transformed the classroom atmosphere. Students who previously struggled to stay focused became more enthusiastic, eagerly participating in activities aimed at reinforcing their understanding of vocabulary and grammar.
This report delves into the findings from before and after the lessons, highlighting what was effective, what wasn’t, and how gamification can be refined for even greater impact. It also outlines a four-week mini-curriculum, providing a framework for incorporating gamified strategies into language learning. The project demonstrates how educators can leverage gamification to improve student retention, boost confidence, and make learning Spanish an exciting experience.
