Understanding and Applying SIFT for Ninth Grade

Module 2 Lab

Original Lesson

Revised Lesson plan

The lesson I chose to revise was used for my capstone project in EDU 226. The objective of the lesson was to introduce students to the SIFT protocol. The original objective was “Students will be able to create an infographic on SIFT using CANVA by engaging in a partner activity using the SIFT protocol”. This original lesson incorporated elements of 5E, as students were prompted to explore how to use SIFT with a partner, evaluate a source using SIFT,  engage in a discussion activity, and the infographic activity allowed students to explain all parts of the SIFT and elaborate on each part of the protocol. In the revised lesson I decided to keep the use of Canva as my one the digital tools and the second digital tool I added was Flipgrid. I decided to incorporate this element to allow an option for students to present different ways to present their work, by creating a video introducing their design. I revised the lesson objective to “Students will be able to identify the parts of SIFT by creating an infographic using CANVA and creating a Flipgrid to introduce their design”. I decided to add prompts to support students in thinking about their design. I want students to focus on not only explaining the SIFT protocol, but also thinking about their overall design. I believe this was an opportunity because if students are using a digital tool and creating a design, it’s important to add a reflection activity within the lesson for students to critically think about their design. I decided to keep the partner activity because this allows students to collaborate and engage in discussion. This lesson is student centered and the 5E model is most effective because the activities are student driven.
