Linked below is the original lesson plan. I had access to it but could not grant access because it was sent to me through google docs only allowing access to me. I copied and pasted it in google docs to allow access.
The lesson plan I linked is one I helped create with my colleague Roxanne Susskind. We currently work in a District 75, 6:1:1 setting with students from diverse needs and backgrounds. Our students are also multilingual learners. This lesson plan was for a formal observation. I unfortunately was not present for personal reasons but we did as a team come up with this plan for our Fundations (phonics) lesson. It was hard to identify weaknesses because I aided in developing this plan. Upon learning more in this class I was able to analyze the deficiencies in this lesson plan and provide feedback for it.

The two digital tools I decided to integrate into this lesson plan is CHOICE WORKS app which can be used for visual and behavior support. I would also incorporate ABC mouse for interactive phonics activities. The evaluation model I chose for this lesson plan is the Kirk Patrick’s Four level Training Evaluation Model. This incorporates reaction, learning, behavior and results.
Reaction:
The students can be assessed by their engagement, behavior choices and enjoyment through using digital tools such as choice works and ABC mouse.
Learning: The students can be evaluated by the increase letter and sound recognition through the exit tickets and use of ABC mouse.
Behavior: The students can be observed of the learned skills during lessons and independent activities.
Results: Evaluate overall improvement by reflecting on letter formation and identifying sounds in diverse context.
My reflection on both lesson plans are as follows:
Original lesson plan:
Strengths:
-Clear structure with varied activities (we do, I do, you do)
-Focused on differentiation and individual goals
- use of resources and many materials to support learning
Weaknesses:
- Limited use of digital tools appropriate for this population
- Potential accessibility issues with physical materials and activities ( fidgeting with papers and iPads used for communication, refusing)
-insufficient support with different communication needs.
Modified lesson plan:
Strengths:
- Incorporation of more useful and population appropriate digital tools ( Choice works app and ABC mouse)
- Improved way to track progress through ABC mouse through student work.
- Applied emphasis on differentiation and individualized support.
Weaknesses:
- Dependance on technology that may not always be accessible or working.
- Possible delay in lesson plan for both students and teachers by using new digital tools.
Thoughts on Accessibility and Assistive Tech:
• The modified lesson plan addresses accessibility more effectively by incorporating digital tools that can provide instant feedback and allow for multiple means of expression and engagement.
• The use of assistive technology (Proloquo and Super symbols) remains consistent, guaranteeing students with communication needs are supported.
Instructional Resources and Models:
• The original lesson plan used traditional resources effectively but lacked the integration of modern technology.
• The modified plan uses digital tools to enhance learning and assessment, matching with UDL principles to provide multiple means of representation, action, and engagement.
Effectiveness of Lesson Plans:
• The original plan is effective in a traditional classroom setting with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and differentiation.
• The modified plan is more effective in providing an inclusive and accessible learning environment, using technology to engage students and assess their understanding in diverse ways.
Overall, my modified lesson plan matches better with UDL principles, offering a more inclusive approach to meet diverse learner needs through the integration of digital tools and enhanced accessibility measures.
