The guidelines below are intended for my 8th-grade ENL classroom. I have created an infographic which I plan to introduce the first week of classes in September. This is a more refined infographic covering the following topics: digital learning, digital footprint, digital citizenship, and digital privacy skills. The language is kept simple and concise. An enlarged physical poster will be placed near the computer cart; its digital version will also be uploaded on Google Classroom. Students will have the ability to translate the pdf file using the Google Translate translate the document option.
1. Topic: Digital Learning: Is it on Google Classroom? Using these guidelines, students will be reminded to check their posts and announcements on Google Classroom. The resources, such as online reading platforms, and language development tools will be available for their independent group work, and will be accessed using their Google Classroom . Did you join your class? Did you check your class posts today? Have you used the ” Resource page?
2. Topic: Digital Footprint Reread before you post. Before posting anything online, students will guided to reread what they intend to post, taking into account their audience, setting, risks, and appropriateness. Did you reread your post before posting? Who is your audience? Is it appropriate? Who can see it? Are posting a group picture, did you ask for permission?
3. Topic: Digital Privacy: Is it fishy? These guidelines will help students be aware of the dos and don’ts of sharing personal or private information while considering potential risks. Do you know who you are sharing with? Are you giving too much information? Is what you are sharing too private? Have you traced your online activities?
4. Topic: Digital Security: Are you visible? Students will use these guidelines to protect themselves from possible online intrusion while securing the risks of being hacked. Is your password strong enough? Did you change your privacy settings? Did you use double authentication? Did you remember not to share your info?
5. Topic: Digital Citizenship/Wellbeing: Got hooked? Then, take a break. Students will be reminded to unplug themselves from the digital world to find balance. Some questions that can be posed to students are: Did you track your time online? How long you’ve been scrolling? When was the last time you took a break?
