The world is changing so fast in favor of merging technology with education. How often do we see babies and toddlers already navigating technological devices such as ipads, tablets, and smartphones to watch Blippi, Ms. Rachel, or CocoMelon. The push for cyber learning has increased along with digital tool accessibility. Digital tools in education refers to making learning accessible through the use of websites and apps; it includes communication between students, teachers, and parents. Apps like google classroom, kahoot, and seesaw are tools commonly used to engage students with classwork. Google classroom along with class dojo are tools that are used for communicating with families. The benefits of using digital tools are that students have access to lessons through multiple modalities. Not only can they have access to videos for better understanding, but they can use the translation tool, and submit work in a way easiest to them. Digital provides options that students did not have before. Because students have a range of learning styles, students should have a range of access to learning materials.
With access to digital tools comes a great responsibility to digital security and privacy. It is imperative that students be taught early how important digital citizenship is. There are rules that govern the digital world. Things like using kind words on the internet, being conscientious of what is uploaded, honesty about one’s own work, prioritizing privacy, browsing securely, mindfulness of online time; all these are examples of behaviors that are to be considered when using digital tools. Students need to be given the opportunity to grow as a community of digital citizens.
